About airports in Qatar
Qatar does aviation differently from everywhere else: the entire country’s scheduled traffic flows through one airport. Since 2014 that airport has been Hamad International (DOH), a single vast terminal south of Doha that has repeatedly been voted the World’s Best Airport by Skytrax, complete with an indoor tropical garden — The Orchard — under its roof.
The one-hub model belongs to Qatar Airways, which connects 200+ destinations through Doha, making the airport one of the great transfer crossroads between Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. The airport it replaced, Doha International (DIA), opened in 1959 and served the country for 55 years; today it handles state, charter and overflow traffic — and famously reopened for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
With only two airports, the guides here go deep instead of wide: terminals and transit at Hamad, parking, the metro into Doha, airport hotels including the airside Oryx, careers and job-scam warnings, plus the honest history of the old airport.

Tips for flying in Qatar
🚇
Metro into Doha
The Doha Metro Red Line runs straight from Hamad International to the city centre and Msheireb in about 35 minutes — cheap, air-conditioned and frequent.
💤
Long layover? Sleep airside
The Oryx Airport Hotel sits inside the terminal, and quiet rooms and sleep pods are spread across the concourses — no need to clear immigration on a transit stop.
🌡️
Respect the heat
Summer temperatures exceed 45°C. Everything at Hamad is indoors and cooled, but keep outdoor transfers and city walks short in the midday sun.
🛂
Stopover smart
Many nationalities can transit visa-free, and Qatar Airways runs official stopover hotel packages — worth checking before booking a long connection.
Frequently asked questions
How many airports does Qatar have?
Two: Hamad International (DOH), which handles all scheduled passenger flights, and the old Doha International (DIA), now used for state, charter and special traffic.
Which airport do flights to Doha use?
All scheduled airlines use Hamad International Airport (DOH). If your ticket says Doha, it means Hamad — the old airport has had no regular scheduled service since 2014.
Is Doha International Airport still open?
Yes, but not for normal airline flights. It serves the Amiri Flight, charters and special operations, and it reopened temporarily for extra traffic during the 2022 World Cup.
How do I get from Hamad Airport to the city?
Fastest and cheapest is the Metro Red Line; taxis and ride-hailing are available around the clock, and Karwa buses serve main districts. The guide compares times and fares.
Where can I find jobs at Hamad Airport?
Only through the official Hamad International and Qatar Airways Group careers portals. Never pay anyone who promises an airport job — the guides explain the scam patterns.
