Location

Dubai International Airport (IATA: DXB, ICAO: OMDB) is the world’s busiest airport for international passengers and the home hub of Emirates and flydubai. Located in Al Garhoud, just across Dubai Creek from the historic districts of Deira and Bur Dubai, DXB handled a record 92.3 million passengers in 2024 and connects Dubai with more than 270 destinations across six continents. Whether you are landing in Dubai for the first time, connecting between Emirates flights, or simply picking someone up, this guide explains how the airport’s three terminals work, what parking costs, how the Metro links the airport to the city, and where to check live arrivals and departures.

TO CITY CENTRE

Because DXB is so large, a little preparation makes a big difference: knowing your terminal before you leave home, understanding the difference between Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, and checking your flight status on the official live board can save you time and stress. Flight times change constantly, so this guide focuses on how everything works — and always points you to the official Dubai Airports flight-status pages for live information rather than printed schedules.

✈️ AT A GLANCE

Dubai Metro Red Line stations sit directly at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3

Parking starts from around AED 15–30 per hour depending on terminal and car park

Terminals

Terminal 3 is the largest building at DXB and is used almost entirely by Emirates, together with its partner Qantas and selected flydubai services. It is linked to three concourses: Concourse A, the world’s first purpose-built A380 facility, Concourse B and Concourse C. An automated train connects the terminal with Concourse A. If your ticket says Emirates, Terminal 3 is your starting point, and it is the terminal most connecting passengers pass through.

Terminal 1, connected to Concourse D, is where the great majority of other international airlines operate — more than 100 foreign carriers, from British Airways and Lufthansa to Air India and Pakistan International. Terminal 2, on the other side of the airfield near Al Qusais, is the main base of flydubai and hosts a mix of regional and low-cost airlines serving South Asia, the Middle East and Central Asia. Terminals 1 and 3 sit side by side in Al Garhoud and share the Metro stations, while Terminal 2 is a separate drive away — so always confirm your terminal on your booking before travelling, especially on flydubai tickets, which can depart from either Terminal 2 or Terminal 3 depending on the destination.

Parking

Dubai Airport parking is organised by terminal, with premium car parks a two-to-three-minute walk from the doors and cheaper economy car parks slightly further away (Terminal 1’s Car Park B is around a seven-to-nine-minute walk, with shuttle connections). Based on the most recently published Dubai Airports tariffs, expect roughly the following at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3: premium parking from about AED 30 for the first hour, around AED 55–65 for three to four hours and about AED 125 for 24 hours, with each additional day around AED 100. Terminal 1’s economy Car Park B is cheaper — about AED 25 for the first hour and roughly AED 85 per day. Terminal 2 offers the lowest Dubai airport parking fees overall: its economy car park starts at around AED 15 per hour with a daily rate near AED 70, while its premium car park is close to AED 30 per hour and AED 125 per day. Valet parking is available at Terminals 1 and 3, typically from around AED 100 per use.

You can pay at the automatic machines with cash or card, and parking can also be pre-booked online through Dubai Airports. Rates, grace periods and promotions change from time to time, and a lost ticket attracts a fixed penalty, so always confirm the current official parking charges on the Dubai Airports website before a long stay. For trips of several days, the economy car parks — or having someone drop you off — work out far cheaper than premium parking near the terminal.

Getting To and From the Airport

The Dubai Metro Red Line is the easiest way into the city: the Airport Terminal 1 and Airport Terminal 3 stations are built into the terminals themselves, and trains run through Union and BurJuman to Downtown Dubai, Mall of the Emirates and beyond towards Jebel Ali. You need a Nol card, fares are zone-based and inexpensive, and services run from early morning until around midnight (later on some days, with a later start on Fridays). A trip to the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall area takes roughly 25–30 minutes from Terminal 3.

Taxis wait outside all three terminals around the clock; airport taxis start with a higher flagfall (about AED 25) and a ride to Downtown Dubai typically costs AED 50–75 depending on traffic and Salik tolls. RTA buses stop outside Terminals 1, 2 and 3 for budget journeys across the city, and all major car rental companies have desks in the arrivals halls. For Abu Dhabi, allow around 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes by road; Emirates and Etihad both run coach connections between the cities for their passengers, and the hourly Airport Express bus links Dubai’s Ibn Battuta station with Abu Dhabi’s airport (see our Abu Dhabi guide). If you are being collected, drivers should use the car parks rather than the busy terminal forecourts.

Facilities and Services

DXB offers free Wi-Fi throughout, extensive lounge choice and facilities closer to a shopping mall than a traditional airport. Emirates operates its own First and Business Class lounges in Concourses A, B and C, while pay-per-use and membership lounges — including Marhaba, Ahlan and Plaza Premium — welcome other passengers. The Dubai International Airport Hotel sits airside inside Terminal 3’s concourses for transit passengers, and sleep pods and cabins are available for shorter naps. You will also find prayer rooms, medical centres, baby-care rooms, children’s play areas, left-luggage and baggage-wrapping services, currency exchange, pharmacies and quiet zones. Interactive Dubai airport maps on the official website and in the DXB app help you locate gates, lounges and services before you travel.

Food and Shopping

Dubai Duty Free is one of the largest airport retailers in the world, selling perfumes, cosmetics, electronics, gold, watches, confectionery and its famous raffles across all terminals — shopping is available both before departure and, in arrivals, for last-minute purchases. Dining ranges from fast food (McDonald’s, KFC, Shake Shack) and coffee (Costa, Starbucks) to sit-down restaurants serving Arabic, Indian, Asian and international dishes, plus local favourites in the food courts of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. Most outlets operate 24 hours, which suits DXB’s round-the-clock flight banks. Prices are airport-level, but the choice at Terminal 3 in particular is among the best of any hub worldwide.

Airlines and Destinations

Emirates flies from Terminal 3 to well over 130 destinations, and flydubai adds around 120 more, many of them unique to the low-cost carrier; together with more than 100 international airlines at Terminals 1 and 2, DXB offers one of the densest route networks on the planet, with especially strong services to India, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and East Asia. Because schedules change by season and even by week, never rely on a printed timetable: use the live departures and arrivals boards on the Dubai Airports website or app, enter your flight number, and check again on the day of travel. The same boards are the authoritative source if you ever need to check whether the airport is operating normally during bad weather or disruption.

Hotels Near the Airport

For an overnight stay, the airside Dubai International Airport Hotel inside Terminal 3 is the most convenient option of all. Just outside the airport on and around Airport Road in Al Garhoud you will find a cluster of reliable airport hotels, most running free shuttle buses: the long-established Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre directly opposite Terminal 1, the Millennium Airport Hotel Dubai, Holiday Inn Express Dubai Airport, Premier Inn Dubai International Airport, Hampton by Hilton Dubai Airport, Aloft Dubai Airport and ibis Styles Dubai Airport Hotel. All are five to ten minutes from the terminals and handy for early departures or late arrivals; Deira’s many mid-range hotels are also within a short taxi ride.

Careers and Jobs at Dubai Airport

DXB is one of the UAE’s biggest employment hubs. The main routes into Dubai airport careers are the operator Dubai Airports, which recruits for operations, engineering, customer service and corporate roles through its official careers portal; the airlines — Emirates and flydubai advertise cabin crew, pilot, engineering and ground roles on their own careers sites; and dnata, the airport services giant that handles ground operations, cargo, catering and travel services at DXB. dnata Dubai airport job vacancies are listed through the Emirates Group careers website and cover ramp, customer service, cargo and technical roles. Always apply through official company portals — genuine UAE airport employers never charge applicants a fee — and check the portals regularly, because vacancies open and close quickly.

FAQs

Which terminal does my flight from Dubai use?

Emirates flights use Terminal 3, flydubai flights use Terminal 2 or (for selected destinations) Terminal 3, and most other international airlines use Terminal 1. Your terminal is printed on your booking and e-ticket — check it before leaving, because Terminal 2 is in a different location from Terminals 1 and 3.

How much is parking at Dubai Airport for one day?

On recent published tariffs, 24 hours costs roughly AED 125 in the premium car parks at Terminals 1 and 3, around AED 85 in Terminal 1’s economy Car Park B, and about AED 70 in Terminal 2’s economy car park. Extra days are cheaper than the first day. Always confirm the current official parking fees on the Dubai Airports website.

Can I take the Metro from DXB to Downtown Dubai?

Yes. The Red Line stations Airport Terminal 1 and Airport Terminal 3 are inside the terminal buildings. Trains run to BurJuman, Union and the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station in about 25–30 minutes. You need a Nol card, and services run from early morning until around midnight.

How can I check if Dubai Airport is open and my flight is on time?

Check the live departures and arrivals board on the official Dubai Airports website or app, or your airline’s flight-status page, and enter your flight number. During rare disruptions the airport and airlines post updates there and on their official social channels — that is the reliable way to confirm whether flights are operating before you set off.

Is there a hotel inside Dubai International Airport?

Yes — the Dubai International Airport Hotel is located airside within Terminal 3’s concourses and can be booked by the stay or in blocks of hours, which is ideal for long layovers. Landside, many airport hotels on Airport Road, such as Le Méridien, Millennium and Premier Inn, are five to ten minutes away by shuttle or taxi.

Summary

Dubai International Airport is a city in its own right: three terminals, two home airlines and more than 90 million passengers a year. Remember the essentials — Emirates in Terminal 3, flydubai mainly in Terminal 2, other airlines in Terminal 1; the Metro is the fastest cheap route downtown; parking ranges from about AED 15 per hour at Terminal 2’s economy car park to around AED 125 a day in premium car parks; and live flight information always comes from the official board. Plan those basics and DXB is one of the smoothest big hubs in the world to travel through.
